10 Tips for a Fire Safe Home

Over the last few weeks, I have shared my story about the water damage to my basement. We are lucky. It was just property damage and insurance did cover it. I don’t take this for granted.

But too often, we take fire safety for granted. Every year in the US there are roughly 350,000 house fires and some 4000 people lose their lives to mostly preventable situations. Fire safety is something I do not overlook. Twenty-two years ago, while working as a nurse, I had to rescue residents of a retirement home from a fire. We lost one of them that night, Anne H. I still remember well. I had to tell her family she perished. I ended up in the ER with smoke inhalation. Unforgettable experience.

House fires happen and we need to do everything we can to prevent them and escape them if needed.

Now here is a bonus tip. It is important to have the right alarms in the right place. Follow this map as a guide for your home!

Note – In garages only an extinguisher is recommended but if I parked my car in the garage I would add smoke and CO detectors as well.

PS. Smoke detectors are best placed on the ceiling 3 feet from the front entry door. CO detector is best on the wall about 5 feet from the floor. Keep both 3 feet away from forced air vents.
