OK this is a big pet peeve for me. Ever try to find some one’s home for the first time, in the dark, in the rain and you can’t find a house number! Ugh.
Imagine though, you are not just trying to get to a party but your kid is on the floor from an injury unconscious and you stand waiting for EMS. Don’t be that homeowner who cannot be found. Make sure your home is well-lit and easy to find for guests but especially for emergency crews. Nothing could hinder a life and death situation from turning out well like help being on the way but the police, fire and EMTs cannot find your house. Yes, many crews have GPS nowadays but it is not always accurate. That life-saving help is only good if they actually get to your door and get inside quickly.
You’d be surprised how many homes have hard to find house numbers or no numbers at all! Take a moment during the day and at night to assess if your home’s address is visible. Maybe there are bushes blocking the numbers or the paint on the mailbox has faded. Maybe the numbers are just poorly lit at night. Be sure numbers are on the mail box, door posts and even consider painting house numbers along the curb. Add a funky decorative sign staked in the ground, but be found.
To make yourself more visible, check your local home store for stick on and nail on number styles that suit your home’s style to make your home easy to find. Try www.atlashomewares.com for some very stylish stick on numbers. For added lighting, without doing any electrical work, opt for solar spot lights that can illuminate your house numbers. Remember, help is only helpful if it gets to you in time!
