DIY Tips for Updating Your Mailbox

Did you ever drive by that house, you know the one, with the beautifully manicured lawn and great curb appeal?  I’ve noticed that a great looking mailbox is a key part of that look.  So I looked at my own mailbox.  Boy, was it lacking pizazz.  I planned a mini makeover and headed to the Home Depot.

Here’s a few quick and low cost face lifts you can do yourself!

Post-Mounted Mailbox

If your box is post mounted consider this:

  • If the post is solid in the ground but needs a new look, clean and sand well.  Remove the old box by taking out the screws. Brush or spray paint the post with exterior paint.
  • Add new house numbers, try nail on or screw on metal numbers
  • Change the box, it should be screwed to the post arm; Screws usually attached to the post on the bottom sides of the box and one in the inside bottom of the box. Be sure to use galvanized screws (they are coated to prevent rusting)

Wall-Mounted Mailbox

If your box is wall mounted:

  • Remove box from the wall of the house by removing the screws
  • Lightly sand the box with fine sandpaper and clean well
  • Brush or spray paint the box with exterior paint, dry completely and remount to the wall of the home.
