A Backyard Oasis: Tips on building a pond

The backyard pond is a real oasis for any nature lover. I have been an avid pond owner for over 12 years and it has been a great journey. My three sons have grown up with fish, frogs, snakes and countless other critters right under their nose. It has been fun, educational, and we are proud that we built it ourselves. With good planning and dirty hands, you too, can create your own private nature center. When planning a pond, there are a number of factors to consider before you start digging. You have many options to create the pond or water feature that suits your lifestyle and yard. Here are a few items to “pond”er:

Pre form ponds are made from hard black plastic forms to give your pond shape. They are thick and have minimal flexibility. You must dig an area equal to the form’s dimensions to support the form after filled with water. Free form ponds leave the DIYer open for creative expression. You can create any shape or depth you want and yes, this process is more labor intensive but so rewarding. After the hole is dug, the surface must be covered with an underlayment (old newspapers work great) and a thick pliable rubber liner. You can cover both pond liners with rocks and create a more natural look on the pond’s bottom.

Pond Sizes

Pre-formed ponds kits are generally small and suitable for small yards, even patios and decks. However, smaller ponds can be more difficult to manage in regards to water quality. So, if you wish to have pond plants and fish, go larger because the larger eco environment is much easier to maintain.

Pond Location

Sunny spots are appealing for blooming pond plants, but full sun exposure lead to more algae growth. Some shade is ideal without too much tree cover to minimize debris in your pond. Also, assess your property drainage. You don’t want anything harmful to drain into your pond, such as fertilized lawn run-off or pet waste.

Filtration/ Pump Systems For Ponds

Cost factors may play into this decision more than any other. You can choose from several types of filtration and pumps. Do spend time researching all your options, considering use of waterfalls and number of fish. The systems are measured by GPH, which is the number of gallons that circulates through the pump and filter each hour. For best water clarity and ease of maintenance, get system large enough to handle your pond’s volume. Choose wisely because this is the most important step to a successful, low maintenance, high enjoyment pond! Here is an excellent website for detailed calculations for the pump/filter ratios.

Local Rules & Regulations

Before proceeding with a pond or water feature project, you must know your local municipal rules for water features. Often, ponds deeper than 24 inches must be fully fenced. Due diligence will protect young children from harm and yourself from liability.

Adding Fish To Your Pond

The addition of fish to any pond is a thing of beauty and a commitment of time. Yes, fish are less demanding than other pets but require care all year long. There are many varieties of pond fish: Koi, Shubunkins, Comets, and goldfish. Some Koi have lived over 20 years, so they truly can become your pets. Our fish eat right out of our hands.
