It’s that time of year when you and your “baby” have to pack up sheets, towels, notebooks, computers and a van full of must-haves. But when you get to campus and start unpacking the assorted boxes and those assembly-required organizers, don’t let yourself be screwed – screwed because you did not pack a screwdriver or any other tools for that matter.
Make sure you equip your young adults with the right stuff. There will be things to put together, hang, and organize. Plus they’ll find there’s no better way to meet dorm mates than to be the ‘chick’ or the ‘dude’ with the coveted hammer.
Now is the time to hit your local home improvement store and create their very own tool box.
Here’s what you need to include:
A tool box or tote
Hammer – 16 oz. or 10 oz.
Screwdriver – Phillips and Slotted in a few different sizes
Level – 12 inch is fine
Frog Tape – there will be posters and things to hang and frog tape won’t mar the walls
Rubber Mallet – this $5 tool is perfect for tapping together those IKEA pieces
3M Command strips – bring a variety of Command strips i.e. hooks, art hangers, etc.
Power strip surge protectors – protect those electronics from power failures
Extension cords- pack two 6-foot cords
Tape measure – 15 foot is the perfect size for the dorm
Flashlights – two flashlights and a stock of batteries is wise
Sharpie – mark belongings to minimize loss of communal stuff
Nails/Screws – small kit for hanging items
Needle nose pliers – perfect tool for electronic and jewelry repairs
Adjustable wrench – good for those assembly required items
Parents, it is not too late to show them a few DIY skills before they fly the coop. You will both be grateful when they can tackle things on their own. PSSSSST, while you’re at it, teach them how to do the laundry too.
