Let’s Cut a RUG! DIY Tips to remove old carpets

Beth Allen rolls up a carpet pad

You can remove wall to wall carpeting all by yourself. It is not as hard as you think. You only need few simple tools and no experience needed.

Now, granted, it does take a bit of time, but it’s so worth it. Not only can you save money–but you can feel super accomplished, knowing you had the ability to do a big project on your own!

Save Money By Removing Old Wall-to-Wall Carpet Yourself

Tools You’ll Need

Utility knife
Hammer
Twine or string
A buddy

Step-by-Step Tutorial

  1. Use your utility knife and cut a straight line into the carpet.
  2. Slice the carpet into strips.
  3. Roll the strips and set aside.
  4. Pull the carpet away from the wall and look for the tack strip–a wooden strip about the width of a yardstick. If you’re getting new carpet installed, leave the tack strip in place. If you’re replacing the carpet with wood or vinyl flooring, remove the tack strip.
  5. Remove the subfloor and bundle it up as well.
  6. Look for staples that were holding the padding to the floor, and remove them.
  7. Vaccuum all dirt and dust, especially near the tack strip.
  8. Bring your carpet and padding bundles to the curb, and pat yourself on the back–you just saved hundreds of dollars!

Here’s a video guide on the DIY HIP Chicks YouTube channel, detailing all of these steps.

With all that money saved, get a flooring upgrade–maybe the nicer padding, or a Berber carpet. You deserve it after all of that hard work!

Not only do you have the ability to remove wall-to-wall carpets–you have the power to do so much more. I know you do. I’ve had SO MANY clients go from knowing nothing about home repair to tackling electrical and plumbing work with confidence.

Want to join them? I’ve got plenty of on-demand courses just for you–like Home Hacks, which includes nine modules on how to tackle common home repairs.
