Never Too Young to be Empowered

Ah! The final days of summer vacation are here.  Reminiscent of when I was a youngster, my kids were riding bikes with friends in the hood.  It was all good fun until somebody lost a fender!  So, my son wanders into the garage, calling for me to help him.  I overheard him tell his friend, “My mom can fix it”.  I was humored by his friend’s response, “Of course she can; she is the HIP Chick”!

Well, I believe they are never too young to be empowered.  My son went to grab a set of wrenches and a screwdriver (Yes, my kids know where the tools are).  I showed them how to loosen the nuts, free the chain from the gears and take the wheel off.  Handing my son a screwdriver, he confidently tightened up the screws on the fender.  The kids worked together to line up the wheel, realign the chain and attach the nuts. They both already knew the righty tighty, lefty loosey trick so we were done in a flash.
Your kids are like sponges; they will soak up all the experience and knowledge you offer them.  Let them help you cook, make home repairs, and sort the laundry.  I have even let my kids add and subtract in the check book.  Life’s lessons begin at home so don’t let those teachable moments escape.  You will be grateful when you have independent capable young people to send out into the world!
